Cirque du Soleil is a circus encompassing elements from around the world. Those elements are incorporated into amazing shows that entertain and delight everyone from the youngest child to the oldest adult. Cirque du Soleil Mystere premiered at Treasure Island, or TI as it is more commonly called, in 1993 and continues to astound audiences with imaginative costumes, colorful sets and highly skilled performers. The Mystere Theater is custom built to take on the cycle of life theme. It is semi-circular in design with a globe like ceiling that is hand painted. Mystere morphs the traditional circus atmosphere with complete craziness that sometimes borders lunacy, and the result is an entertainment package for the entire family. There are two hard and fast rules that apply to audience members when attending a Mystere performance and that is “keep an eye on your popcorn and watch out for the clown.”
Mystere features performers who are conditioned like Olympic gymnasts whose strength make their entertainment accomplishments look effortless as they use their body strength to balance against each other or arm and leg power to move up and down a pole. The performers cavort around the stage and through the audience with such grace and precision it is hard to believe they are not the creature they portray. Cirque du Soleil Mystere features stunts such as the aerial cube, which is a large metal cube that is juggled as the juggler soars through the air and performs a ballet.
The performers match their skill and flexibility with their comedic actions for many light hearted twists and turns during the show, as the master of ceremonies tries his very best to bring order to the entertainment that has turned into chaos. Of course, the popcorn tossing clown sabotages the master of ceremony at every point preventing the madness from becoming an orderly mix of talent and breathe taking events performed on the stage and in the aisle. That is part of the formula of what makes Mystere so special and entertaining.
The sound track that accompanies the performance is a mix of rock and roll, African and Celtic influences with a dash or two of funk thrown in for good measure and performed by live musicians and singers. The haunting music captures the spirit of the show and adds much to the playful mystery unfolding right in front of the audiences eyes.
Mystere is a compilation of high-energy acrobatics, inspired imagery and aerial artists on the high bar, coupled with the whimsy of the electrifying, big red bird and giant baby with a red bouncing ball, brings the audience the full spectrum of athleticism and physical power that has become the trademark of Cirque du Soleil shows. The Chinese pole climbers are breath taking as they hand over hand their way up and down a pole that seems to hold steady in mid air and the death defying aerialists that makes shooting through the air look effortless and a typical day at the office.
Mystere is 90 minutes in length and very kid friendly. Mystere performs two shows a night on designated show nights at 7:00 and 9:30 PM. Refreshments are available in the theater, especially popcorn. Anyone who loves gymnastics, colorful costumes, and double jointed acrobats will love Cirque du Soleil Mystere and all it has to offer.
