Cirque du Soleil O is one of several Cirque imaginative shows in residence, in Las Vegas. O is performed at the Bellagio Hotel in the O Theater. Cirque du Soleil is an aquatic production taken from the word eau (or O), meaning water. The theater contains a 1.5 million gallon and 25 foot deep water tank built into the stage. The stage area is kept at a constant temperature of 88 degrees while the audience area is considerably cooler.
The excitement of O begins even before the show does as two clowns attempt to stay dry under an umbrella that has holes in it, while making their way through the audience. Then the smell of spices grips the audience as the spice man swings an incense burner while making his way through the theater on his way to the stage. The show opens as synchronized swimmers stroke in perfect harmony while trapeze performers lower down from the ceiling a showcase an aerialist duo above the swimming pool.
The world of O is underway and explores a fantasy world conveyed through the performances of synchronized swimmers, divers and world class acrobats and gymnasts. The show has more than 80 performers and 150 stage hands that work in perfect harmony to bring a display that is more of an event of sophistication and rapture. The constantly flowing movement of the show is highlighted by special effects and exquisite lighting. Couple those visual sights with an innovative soundtrack performed by live musicians and singers, and the story of O is nothing short of spectacular.
During one point of the event, a barge floats into center stage and the acrobats create innovative poses and shapes with their bodies intertwining into a human puzzle, creating beautiful images. The stage plays a major role in the performance as it is transformed from a pool of water to a flat surface in a matter of seconds. The elements of air, water and fire are explored as the set changes from an underwater stage to dry land where tribal dancers perform their ritual dancing routines along with fire batons.
Each act seems to fade into the next as the performance proceeds flawlessly. One performer no sooner completes a breath taking stunt, and then the next character comes along to outdo the one before with ballet moves and gymnastic skill. Once the stage returns to water, the diver take to the swings and amaze the audience with spins and flips as they launch themselves from the swings and plummet to the pool below.
Three world class divers climb a 60 foot high ladder to a platform high above pool side, and each makes the jump to their own small section of the pool with precision. This causes the audience to hold their breath and wait for the trio to resurface unscathed and unharmed and ready to do it again. Not to be outdone, contortionists amaze the audience with their water stunts as they gracefully float upon the water in unthinkable positions and almost inhuman like poses.
Cirque du Soleil O is a cavalcade of performers who knit together a breath taking show of near impossible proportions. As the characters take the audience through the wonder of dream and magical fantasy, the stage becomes the world for a short time. The high energy acrobatics and gymnastics combine with the military precision of dance to leave the audience of all ages spell bound and waiting for the next adventure to begin.
